Ficus Ruby-8in
The Ficus Elastica 'Ruby' (also known as the Variegated Rubber Tree) is a stunning tropical plant. Unlike the Ponytail Stump, which is very "hands-off," the Ruby requires a bit more attention to keep its pink variegation bright and healthy.
Here is your English care guide:
1. Light: The "Color Maker"
• Bright, Indirect Light: This is the most important factor. To keep those vibrant pink and ruby tints, the plant needs plenty of light.
• Low Light Issues: If it doesn't get enough light, the new leaves will turn dark green or cream, losing the pink "glow."
• Avoid Harsh Sun: While it loves light, direct midday sun can scorch the delicate variegated parts of the leaves.
2. Watering: Finding the Middle Ground
• The Touch Test: Water when the top 1–2 inches (2–5 cm) of soil feel dry to the touch.
• Consistency: It prefers a consistent schedule. It is less drought-tolerant than a Ponytail Palm, but it will drop leaves if the soil stays "soggy" for too long.
• Drainage: Always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
3. Humidity & Leaf Care
• Humidity: Being a tropical plant, it loves a bit of extra moisture in the air. Misting the leaves or using a pebble tray is helpful in dry indoor environments.
• Clean the Leaves: Those large, waxy leaves are dust magnets. Wipe them down with a damp cloth every couple of weeks. This allows the plant to photosynthesize efficiently and keeps it looking shiny.
4. Important Tips
• The "Stationary" Rule: Ficus plants are famous for being "drama queens" when moved. Once you find a spot where it's happy, leave it there. Sudden changes in temperature or location can cause it to drop its leaves.
• Toxic Sap: The plant contains a milky white sap (latex) that can irritate the skin and is toxic if ingested by pets or children. Handle with care during pruning.
